WILTON - Connecticut's Tax-Free Week begins Sunday, just in time for back-to-school shoppers, but officials say this year the program underwent some changes.

The new state budget requires that only items $100 or less will be tax-free.

Previously, the tax was waived for purchased under $300.

At Chou Chou in Wilton, employees had been advertising sales using the old system, and now they say they'll likely face a loss.

Experts say the state will likely gain $1 million in revenue due to the change. They call it a tax increase.

But state Sen. Bob Duff says the weeklong tax holiday could still save shoppers up to $6 million.

Lawmakers say they may bring the exemption back to $300 in the future.
