NORWALK - With two confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in Connecticut, local churches are taking preventative measures during weekend services.

The Diocese of Bridgeport sent its 87 churches a set of guidelines to fight against the spread of the virus among parishioners.

Listed precautions include encouraging worshipers not to hold hands, sharing the sign of peace without a traditional handshake or hug, and receiving communion in the hand instead of the tongue.

Churches are also being told that they can suspend the chalice if it seems necessary. "If this does intensify, I would expect to see more recommendations made in a more strong form," says Michael A. Bocciccio, of St. Philip's in Norwalk.

The diocese says the guidelines are only recommendations and that it is ultimately up to each parish and parishioner to do what they feel is best.
