STAMFORD - The cicadas are back.

The insects burrow underground and feed off tree roots for 16 years before emerging. They are known as much for their exoskeletons as their distinctive buzzing, and hit their peak when temperatures become steady in the mid-60s.

At the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, managers say cicadas will arrive in June and vanish by July. They also say populations are likely to be stronger in parts of Fairfield and New Haven counties.
