NEW CANAAN - Seniors in New Canaan got a little help from the experts today in learning how to keep themselves safe from scam artists.

Experts say seniors make desirable targets for white collar criminals. Seniors at the class were given tips on how to safely create PINs and use ATM cards. They were also told to not leave envelopes sticking out of the mailbox for the mail carrier because someone could get account information that way.

Lt. James Perez, of the Fairfield Police Department, says seniors should always say no to anyone trying to call or email them seeking personal information. Seniors were also told to contact Direct Marketing Association to have their data removed from solicitation lists.

The experts say people should also check with credit reporting agencies to make sure their cards are not being misused.
