MILFORD - The Coast Guard says two men are safe after their raft drifted out to the Long Island Sound overnight.

They say the men left Silver Sands State Park in Milford in a small raft sometime before 8:30 p.m. Monday. They say strong winds blew their raft out into open water.

According to the Coast Guard, one of the men was able to swim to Charles Island to try to get help, but ended up having to stay there overnight until he could walk back to shore on a sand bar. He was treated Tuesday morning for dehydration and hypothermia.

They say the other man was stranded on the boat overnight and was rescued by an off-duty Coast Guard auxiliary member in the morning.

The Milford Fire Department was also called to the scene and says the incident could have been much worse, especially for the man who was stranded on the boat.

"The chance that he got found by someone was lucky.  He could have drifted all the way to New York," says Capt. Greg Carman, of the Milford Fire Department.

Authorities have not yet released the names or ages of the two men.
