Communities urged to apply for anti-gang funding

NORWALK - U.S. Rep. Chris Shays met with local leaders and police officials Monday to tackle the issue of gang violence.

Many community leaders feel the problem of gang violence is festering and are trying to come up with ways to get it under control. Norwalk Mayor Dick Moccia has been hoping for federal help ever since a string of shootings following the stabbing death of an alleged gang member in January.

Shays says he?ll help find and implement solutions. He is urging community leaders to join in applying for a range of federal funding. He feels they will be more effective in getting the money if they join together.

Shays says this was just the first of many meetings. He says next time, he hopes to have Department of Corrections officials and school officials bring their expertise to the table.
