GREENWICH - Dozens of parents and students turned out Tuesday at Greenwich Public Schools headquarters to support a longtime high school band leader fighting to keep his job.

Supporters say John Yoon is a popular teacher with more than 20 years under his belt, but district officials accuse him of bullying students. He is appealing his firing by the district's superintendent.

At issue are the tactics Yoon has used to discipline students. Parents have accused the teacher of humiliating their children.

Last year, Yoon agreed to a 10-day suspension after five complaints by parents. After two more this year, school officials began the process to remove him.

Students who support Yoon say his style is strict, but fair. They say he holds all of his students to the same standard.

Yoon's lawyer says the district inadequately investigated the accusations. News 12 learned Tuesday at the hearing that he wasn't even interviewed about the latest complaints until after officials suspended him.

An arbitrator is deciding this week whether to uphold Yoon's firing. The hearing will continue Wednesday at a larger venue because so many people showed up.
