NEW HAVEN - (AP) - Police say a man who accepted a ride toa New Haven train station on Christmas morning wound up being shotand robbed instead.

Forty-nine-year-old Kenneth Cates is reported in seriouscondition at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Police said Cates was waiting at a street corner for a cabshortly before 5 a.m. Friday when an SUV pulled up. Cates offeredthe driver $5 for a ride to the train station but when he got inthe vehicle, police say a struggle began and a passenger in the cartook out a shotgun.

Police said the gun went off twice and Cates was shot in thehand and stomach. He was also robbed of cash, a cell phone and agold chain.

No arrests were reported.
