REDDING - State officials today provided more details on a new program to crack down on motorists who text.

Increased patrols are scheduled to start tomorrow and run through Wednesday.

Police in Redding, Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield, Monroe, Newtown and Ridgefield are taking part in the program. Authorites are warning drivers that they face a ticket for texting or making a hand-held call while driving.

The state says police will test new techniques, such as posting a plain-clothes officer on an overpass to alert police on the ground of violators.

Officials says a previous study in Hartford showed that the techniques cut texting by 72 percent.
