Conn. Senate votes for pot decriminalization bill

NORWALK - The Connecticut Senate narrowly approved legislation yesterday that decriminalizes the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

The measure passed after Democratic Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman broke an 18-to-18 tie vote as the president of the state Senate. It now moves to the House of Representatives for final legislative action.

State officials say being caught with less than 4 ounces of marijuana under the current law is punishable with a fine up to $1,000 and possibly jail time. Police say the new proposal would change that to an infraction.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who would need to sign the bill into law if it passes the House, released a statement after last night's vote stating the proposal is a "common sense reform." AP wire services were used in this report.
