BRIDGEPORT - (AP) - State police say a trooper hit a manwith his cruiser in Bridgeport after the man darted out in front ofhim on a dark highway.

Police say the pedestrian, 46-year-old Melvin Gordils ofShelton, was in critical but stable condition after the earlymorning accident Saturday.

Police say trooper Darren Pavlik was on patrol on Route 25 southat about 2:30 a.m. when Gordils ran into the cruiser's path andPavlik couldn't avoid him.

Police say Gordils had parked his truck on the shoulder of Route25 north and then ran across the highway for unknown reasons.

They say Pavlik, a 19-year veteran of the force, gave first aidto Gordils until an ambulance arrived.
