WATERFORD - Flags are flying at half-staff across Connecticut today after the death of a Norwalk-based National Guardsman from Waterford.

Staff Sgt. Edwin Rivera, 28, died Tuesday at the Naval Medical Center from complications from head injuries he sustained last week after his unit was hit in Laghman Province.

Gov. Jodi Rell (R-Conn.) called the death heartbreaking and said it will add greater poignancy to Memorial Day observances this weekend.

Rivera is survived by his wife and two young children.
