MILFORD - A construction worker was killed Wednesday when a tractor-trailer crashed into the backhoe he was working in on I-95 near the Milford-Orange border.

Police say the accident happened shortly after 4 a.m. when the truck couldn't avoid hitting the boom arm of a construction truck, which was sticking out into the road on the southbound side of I-95 between exits 41 and 42.

Anthony Diorio, 56, of Unionville, was thrown from the backhoe and pinned under the wheels of the tractor-trailer. Authorities say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Diorio was putting up a guardrail for ADF Industries at the time of the crash.
