Cost of hops used to make beer on the rise
SOUTHPORT - The cost of hops used to make beer is on the rise.
Hops is the key ingredient in India Pale Ales. While the cost for hops is up, brewers at Southport Brewing Company, among others, have taken steps to protect themselves and their customers from sudden price spikes.
Many Connecticut brewers also say current increases in the cost of hops do not impact current beer prices because most craft brewers have hops contracts with locked in rates. Maltose Express, Southport Brewing Company, Two Roads in Stratford and Half Full in Stamford all say they have hops contracts through 2017.
