BRIDGEPORT - Gov. Dannel Malloy has signed a bill that officially recognizes a former Bridgeport resident as the first man to fly.

It states that aviator Gustave Whitehead flew in 1901.

That is two years before the Wright brothers.

Supporters of the Wright brothers, including the Smithsonian Institution, say Whitehead's followers are wrong.
