CT residents go on 'Staycations,' save money

NORWALK - The new statewide "Staycation Initiative" kicks off Thursday, offering people daunted by high travel costs a chance to have fun without breaking the bank this holiday season.

The campaign to promote in-state tourism has 100 businesses on board, ranging from mini-golf courses to museums, which offer low-priced activities during the upcoming 4th of July weekend.

In Norwalk, the Stepping Stones Children Museum is giving away coupons for a free gallon of gas with the purchase of two admission tickets, while the Maritime Aquarium is offering discounted tickets and package deals to Metro-North riders.

"I think people will appreciate that the museum recognizes that times are a little tough and gas prices are expensive," says Robin Wexler, of Stepping Stones.

For those Connecticut residents with a taste for classical music, the Bartlett Arboretum has concerts in Stamford every Sunday.
