NORWALK - As America observes National Rape Awareness Month, a southwestern Connecticut woman spoke out publicly for the first time today about the nightmare of being sexually assaulted by her own husband.

Anais Valentin, 24, has been staying at a local women's shelter after she says she was repeatedly beaten and raped by her husband.

The mother of two says nothing in her experience told her what to do when the honeymoon ended and the abuse began.

Valentin says her husband ended up in jail, but when he came out, she gave him a second chance, and the violence began anew.

Eventually, Valentin was forced to leave her home and flee to a crisis center. Now, the 24-year-old seeks to raise awareness about the all-too-common problem that often gets overlooked.
