STRATFORD - An Alabama woman who told police she runs a dog rescue faced a judge Wednesday afternoon on charges of animal cruelty in Connecticut.

Police say Deanalyn Reing was hauling a hot trailer on I-95 loaded with nearly 30 dogs when they arrested her.

Reing was carrying the dogs in crates, according to police. Police say the crates were tightly packed into the poorly ventilated trailer, where the temperature reached 96 degrees.

Reing allegedly told investigators that she runs an animal rescue in Alabama, but their investigation revealed that she was already on probation for a conviction on similar animal cruelty charges in the state.

The dogs were delivered to local shelters, which are now overcrowded, local rescuers say. The problem has prompted an emergency pet adoption event to be scheduled for next Tuesday.
