Death toll rises, chaos spreads in Egypt

CAIRO - (AP) - Egypt's capital is descending further into chaosafter five days of anti-government protests that left more than 70people dead.

Thousands of protesters have defied a curfew for the secondnight, standing their ground in Cairo's main square in a rejectionof President Hosni Mubarak's promises of reform and a newgovernment.

Gangs of thugs are setting fires and looting shops and homes.Residents and shopkeepers in affluent neighborhoods are boarding uptheir houses and stores.

Tanks and armored personnel carriers have fanned out across thecity, guarding key government buildings. Egyptian television saysthe army is deploying reinforcements to neighborhoods to try tocontrol the lawlessness.

The military is protecting major tourist and archaeologicalsites such as the Egyptian Museum, home to some of the country'smost treasured antiquities.

The country's antiquities chief says would-be looters broke intothe museum, ripped the heads off two mummies and damaged about 10small artifacts before being caught by soldiers.
