NEW CANAAN - The longstanding debate over a plan for new sidewalks in New Canaan is heating up as voters get ready to cast their ballots in a special referendum tomorrow.

News 12 Connecticut spoke with residents for and against the building of new sidewalks on Main Street.

Proponents of the plan say installing sidewalks would give school children a secure pathway on which to walk, as well as improve the general public's safety.

Those opposed to the plan say narrowing the road would make passing dangerous, and give fire trucks and other emergency vehicles little room. They also say the plan is too expensive.

Both sides are vocal about their position - "yes" and "no" signs have popped up along Main Street.

Residents can vote tomorrow between 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at New Canaan High.
