BRIDGEPORT - A Bridgeport high school student has won a full college scholarship thanks to his passion for music.
Demetri Smith, a senior at Bassic High School, was accepted to the University of New Haven in January, but was not sure how he was going to pay for his education.
Smith joined an online competition that required a business idea and a Facebook page. He created Velocity Music Group, an independent music label to help young urban artists. Soon after, Smith received a phone call informing him that he won a $120,000 scholarship.
“I'm going to enjoy my summer and just know that I've been blessed with money to go to college and make the best of it,” says Smith.
Smith wants to be a double major in business and music. His dream is to become a music mogul.
