BRIDGEPORT - A Bridgeport man suspected of fatally hitting a friend with his car and running from the scene appeared in court today.

Police say Dennis Berrios, 36, hit Tyron Tate last month on Noble Avenue.

Investigators say Tate was walking in the street with several other people when he was ran down.

The victim's family says Berrios was actually friends with Tate and knew him for about four years.

Defense attorney Bob Gulash says the judge continued the case for about a month to allow both sides time to finish their investigations.

News 12 Connecticut is told that Berrios's defense team requested extra security in the court room because they knew that their client, who is free on bond, would have to walk past the victim's family members.

Officials charged Berrios with evading responsibility. Police say Berrios could be facing additional charges. He is due back in court on Oct. 6.
