NORWALK - With a big drop in state funding this year, the Department of Transportation is suggesting some new changes to help increase revenue, including a fare hike for commuters.

The Department of Transportation wants to increase Metro-North fares by 5 percent starting January 1, 2017.

That's on top of a 1 percent increase that's already planned.

Officials also want to close ticket windows at the South Norwalk, Greenwich and Bridgeport train stations, saying they're underperforming.

CT Transit bus fares would also rise to $1.75 per ride.

Other cuts would include fewer staff at highway rest stops and a reduction in maintenance work.
