BRIDGEPORT - Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed through Saturday, Aug. 15 for a major computer upgrade.

MV Commissioner Andres Ayala says the upgrade should cut down on long lines at DMV offices, and says workers are practicing on the new system. "We want to ensure that the proficiency is high so that when we do open our office on the 18th, they will be able to service our customers as quickly as possible."

The new system will let residents renew their registration and even print it out right from home. It will also allow people to settle any tax delinquencies beforehand.

The DMV says the new system will go live next Monday.

Drivers can still come to the DMV this week to renew a driver's license. That can also be done at AAA offices.

The state is giving motorists until Oct. 10 to renew anything that expires this month.
