BRIDGEPORT - The woman accused of fatally hitting a pedestrian in Bridgeport over Memorial Day weekend spoke exclusively to News 12 Connecticut after appearing in court today, saying the incident was unavoidable.

Brenda Stroman opened up about the incident that killed 60-year-old Milagros Rivera and injured another person.

"It's been a real toll because I can't sleep at night. It's terrible," says Stroman. "And then I don't even know why that lady was even out there that night on the ground."

She also says she remained at the scene and police then let her go, which is why she doesn?t believe she should be charged.

A witness has said that Rivera and the other person were lying on the road when they were struck.

Rivera's family, however, is upset that Stroman is only facing a negligent homicide charge.

"She didn't only hurt me and my sister and my family, she hurt our kids," says Milagros daughter, Richezza Rivera. "My kids were real close to my mother."
