BRIDGEPORT - Former Bridgeport state Sen. Ernie Newton is facing charges for illegally using public money to fund his unsuccessful re-election campaign last year.
The state's attorney's office says the 56-year-old was arrested Friday.
Officials say he allegedly used false documentation to get more than $80,000 from Connecticut's Citizens Election program.
Newton previously served time in prison for corruption charges.
His attorney says his client was singled out because of his past.
