NEW CANAAN - A New Canaan man who was deputy White House counsel during the Bush administration was charged Thursday with trying to kill his wife.

John Michael Farren, 57, is accused of beating his wife Mary with a flashlight before trying to strangle her Wednesday night.

Police say Mary Farren passed out during the attack, but later woke up and fled the home with her children. She's in stable condition at Norwalk Hospital with a broken nose and jaw.

An arrest warrant reveals the attack took place two days after Mary Farren had served her husband with divorce papers.
