BRIDGEPORT - A criminal justice expert says the recent surge in violence in Bridgeport likely has to do with drugs and gangs.

University of New Haven Professor James Monahan says more than 30 different gangs are currently operating in Bridgeport.

Monahan believes the most recent shootings may be the result of turf wars brought on by a drop in the price of street drugs. He says cheaper drugs mean more competition, and that makes drug dealers more territorial.

Mayor Bill Finch is holding a meeting tomorrow to discuss violence in the city.
