FAIRFIELD - A man who was involved in an hours-long standoff with police shot and killed himself near a Fairfield apartment complex last night, officials say.

Police were summoned to the Colonial Gardens Condominium Complex on Sunnyridge Avenue last night after receiving a call about a domestic dispute. Police say the man, 40-year-old Douglas Garni, allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun, prompting her to run to a neighbor's apartment and call police.

Neighbors were evacuated as SWAT team members and police officers swarmed the area. Police say Garni barricaded himself in the apartment with two guns.

Police say they tried unsuccessfully to make contact with the man. They say he somehow exited the apartment and walked to a wooded area near the complex.

About four hours after police had been summoned there, a single gunshot rang out, and Garni's body was found moments later.

Police say there doesn't appear to be any history of domestic violence between the man and his girlfriend, who has not been identified.
