FAIRFIELD - Fairfield health officials say they are kicking off a new initiative to raise awareness about the Zika virus.

They are handing out reading materials with tips on how people can prevent becoming victims with the help of the Fairfield Easton Medical Reserve Corps and the Fairfield Community Emergency Response Team.

One tip states that if you're going to be outside, wear mosquito repellant and long sleeve shirts and pants. Another tip is to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Officials say any item or area that has standing water can be a mosquito breeding area.

Officials say so far, 14 people in Connecticut have tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease, which can cause fever, rash and serious birth defects.

They say though a lot of people may already be familiar with the tips, there is a lot more urgency with the spread of the Zika virus.
