Fairfield police issue scam warning

Fairfield police are warning elderly residents to be suspicious of calls from scam artists saying that their grandchildren are in foreign countries needing large amounts

FAIRFIELD - Fairfield police are warning elderly residents to be suspicious of calls from scam artists saying that their grandchildren are in foreign countries needing large amounts of money wired immediately.

The warning comes after police say a woman almost fell victim to the scam. According to police, someone claiming to be a Canadian Mountie called to say her grandson had been arrested for DWI and needed $2,000 for bail.

When she went to her local Western Union, police say she was told all transfers were frozen due to the Times Square bomb scare. Authorities say this gave her time to call her grandson, who was safe in college in Maine.
