FAIRFIELD - Fairfield police are searching for relatives of a former officer that was killed in the line of duty 116 years ago.

Deputy Sheriff Frances Melville Pike died while arresting a suspect on May 13, 1894 and will be honored in the nation's capital later this year.

The department hasn't been able to find a picture of Sheriff Pike. It says its research shows he was not married and didn't have any children, so there are no direct decedents.

A newspaper article from the time says Pike was in the act of making an arrest when he died from heart failure caused by over-exertion.

Pike will be officially added to the national law enforcement memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 13, which will also be the 117th anniversary of his death.
