FAIRFIELD - Fairfield?s Parks and Recreation Commission discussed the issue of smoking on local beaches during tonight?s meeting.

The issue was raised by Susan Hersh, who has proposed the creation of designated smoking areas on Fairfield's beaches.

Hersh says that not only are the health factors an issue, but smokers litter the beach with discarded cigarette butts.

Park regulations currently prohibit smoking at playgrounds, but no regulations exist regarding smoking on beaches.

The board did not make a decision tonight and plans to form a committee to look into the plan further.
