FAIRFIELD - The state bomb squad safely detonated a World War II artillery shell discovered today inside a Fairfield home.

Kathy Stracken, of 1062 Reef Road, says she was going through old materials stored in the house, which has been under construction since Hurricane Sandy. When she opened a trunk belonging to her late father, she found a 37 mm bullet he had apparently brought back from battle.

Police say many artillery shells that resurface are usually disarmed, but add that Stracken's could have easily demolished her property.
