BRIDGEPORT - The family of a disabled woman from Stamford who is facing deportation said that she will die if she is returned to Guatemala.

The family of 24-year-old Mirca Tax met with their lawyer Saturday in Bridgeport. They say that Tax is physically and mentally disabled and has a hard time walking.

Tax's family said that she is totally dependent upon their care, and if she were to be sent back to Guatemala, she would die within a year.

Brenda Tax is Mirca's sister, and she says like her, Mirca is in the U.S. illegally.

Immigration attorney Alex Meyerovich is seeking diplomatic asylum for Mirca, for whom he says deportation is not an option.

"If Mirca is deported back to Guatemala, it's very likely that she will die," he said.

When he appeals for asylum, Meyerovich will tell the judge that Brenda Tax may not have a green card, but she does have a job, which means she can afford to care for her sister.

Meyerovich says that because Mirca has special needs and because Guatemala cannot meet those needs, he has a strong case for her to receive asylum.

Tax's family has set up a fund to help pay for her legal expenses.
