TRUMBULL - A wake was held Sunday for a Trumbull man who police say was stabbed to death in Washington, D.C.

Kevin Sutherland, a 24-year-old Trumbull native, was headed to Philadelphia for the Fourth of July weekend when he was stabbed inside a subway train during an attempted cellphone robbery.

His killer, Jasper Spires, is now behind bars and is facing a murder charge.

Family and friends of Sutherland say he was never happier than when he was in Washington.

Sutherland graduated from American University just a few years ago. His college roommates and colleagues remembered his devotion to politics and his love for country music and the New York Yankees.

During his time in D.C., Sutherland interned under Rep. Jim Himes. Most recently, he worked on Democratic campaigns.

Family members say his memory will live on through an American University scholarship recently made in his name.

Sutherland's funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jude Church in Monroe.
