BRIDGEPORT - The family of 18-year-old Austin Carr tells News 12 Connecticut that they have no idea how he ended up getting shot by a police officer in a quiet neighborhood in the North End of Bridgeport.

Police say they were conducting a special operation following a string of armed robberies Wednesday night when they came across two gunmen wearing masks -- Carr and a 16-year-old male -- at Woodmont Avenue and Peet Street. Authorities say that when the pair was told to drop their weapons, Carr did not.

One officer discharged his service weapon, hitting Carr once in the face. Police say he was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center and then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital for surgery. He is listed in stable condition.

Isabell Richardson, Carr’s aunt, says her nephew has always been a good student who planned to join the Marine Corps. She does not believe that he is capable of committing armed robbery.

Authorities have released pictures of fake firearms they say were used in the crime. Investigators say it was impossible for officers to distinguish them from real guns.

Police say Carr, a student at Central High School, and the 16-year-old are facing charges of first-degree criminal attempted robbery.
