BRIDGEPORT - The family of three Bridgeport residents killed in a crash in New York earlier this week is asking for the public's help in raising funds to cover their funeral services.

Chopper 12 was above the scene Wednesday morning on I-84 in Wawayanda, Orange County, located about 60 miles northwest of New York City.

Police say Jesenia Valentin, 29, ran out of gas and stalled in the right lane of the highway. A tractor-trailer then crashed into the stopped vehicle, killing Valentin, her 9-year-old daughter, Angelina Rodriquez, and her 12-year-old niece, Asyria Ferrer. Two dogs were killed as well.

Valentin was speaking with a 911 operator when the operator heard the crash, cutting the line.

Family members say Valentin was a hardworking single mother who worked at a local jewelry store for the past several years to support her daughter, and that family was the focus of her life.

City Councilwoman Jeanette Herron says Valentin was a relative of hers and a beloved member of the Bridgeport community.

The family says they are in the process of making funeral arrangements. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the expenses.

New York State Police say the truck driver was unharmed and will not face charges.
