EASTON - Some western Connecticut fruit farmers say they don't expect major crop damage despite the recent extreme cold snap.

Irv Silverman, of Silverman's Farm in Easton, gave News 12 a tour of his business. He says he's mostly concerned about his 3-year-old peach trees, as a warm winter followed by starkly colder weather is never good for them.

However, Silverman says the trees have not yet bloomed enough to sustain serious damage.

In fact, farmers hope that the bitter cold sticks around for a few more weeks because an early thaw is actually bad news for trees. Silverman says it would be detrimental if, for example, the flowers bloom and temperatures dip back down into the 20s.

He also says the continued cold prevents trees from blooming any further until it warms up.
