BRIDGEPORT - A farmers market aimed at catering to Bridgeport’s East End is offering healthy food options to an area that has not had a local grocery store in 35 years.
Officials say the closest grocery store with fresh fruit and vegetables can be found in Stratford.
A spokeswoman from the state Department of Public Health says neighborhoods that do not have access to wholesome foods have increased rates of obesity, diabetes and heart attacks.
The East End farmers market is located at 985 Stratford Ave. and is open every Sunday from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. through October.
It is one of four farmers markets in the city.
