FEMA tours southwestern CT, assesses Irene damage

FAIRFIELD - Many businesses and homeowners in southwestern Connecticut are hoping they can qualify for federal aid for the destruction from Hurricane Irene.

Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency were in Westport today adding up the damage.

From Canal Beach to the smaller side streets, the signs of destruction are all visible.

One resident's waterfront home on Spriteview Avenue was flooded with more than 2 feet of water, mud and debris.

The tours by FEMA will result in a damage report that will allow Gov. Dannel Malloy (D-Conn.) to ask President Barack Obama to declare Connecticut a major disaster area.
