NORWALK - Flu season may be over for humans, but dogs could be at risk of catching "dog flu."

Veterinarians say a particularly aggressive new strain of dog flu that originated in Asia hasn't reached southwestern Connecticut yet, but there is a good chance that it will be here soon.

So far, the University of Wisconsin says the new strain has sickened at least 1,000 dogs in the Midwest. Symptoms are similar to the human flu.

"Dogs can get the flu just like people," says veterinarian Beth Whitney, of the VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center.

Whitney says it is unclear how effective vaccines are against this new strain.

Vets say the best advice they can give is to keep a close eye on your dogs and other dogs that your dog comes in contact with, especially nose-to-nose contact. As long as it is spotted early, dog flu usually doesn't lead to something more serious like pneumonia.
