STAMFORD - Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia broke down the financial details today of the city's plan to merge four volunteer fire departments into one, leading some to increase their criticism of the plan.

The mayor's plan to restructure the city's fire department is said to cost more than $8 million and will pay for 58 new full-time employees. He insists that there will be no additional cost to taxpayers and that part of their property taxes will be diverted to a fire-protection service fee.

Union leader Brandon Keatley disagrees, saying that some professional firefighters who are stationed among volunteers will be relocated to new districts. He says residents in those districts will have to pay for increased firefighter manpower.
