ORANGE - Crews in Orange spent much of Thursday evening battling a fire that started in a pile of mulch.

The fire sparked at around 4 p.m. and winds picked it up, spreading it to a nearby wooded area.

The flames charred about 15 acres near Edison Road. The smoke drifted across I-95, causing a lot of commuters to pump the brakes.

Firefighters say they've been able to control the fire and have knocked down the flames. Now, a smaller crew is on the site attempting to knock out hot spots.

Water was an issue, as there's only one available water source. Crews had to bring in water tanks and run a hose to the source.

Orange First Selectman Jim Zeoli says it isn't the first time that crews have had to fight a brush fire in the area. He says the town's zoning board has had issues with the owner of the lot. Still, he says state officials tell him the company isn't violating any state laws.
