FAIRFIELD - Officials are investigating the cause of the fire that ripped through a metal shop last Thursday.

Firefighters state they knew the blaze was a chemical fire at the Superior Plating Company at 2 Lacey Place because of its size and color. The fire marshal believes the building was up to code, although officials say there was no automatic fire alarm.

The incident commander says the fire had to be doused with water from the outside because it was too dangerous for firefighters to step inside.
