Former Westport man killed in boating accident

WESTPORT - The Stew Leonard family is mourning the death of a friend and former Westport resident killed in a boating accident near the Virgin Islands.

Robert Speranza, 73, died last week after being swept overboard by a 15-foot wave.

Stew Leonard Sr. says he was on his boat, "Stew's Special," with his son, Speranza and the boat's captain.

The four were traveling from St. Maarten to Virgin Gorda.

Leonard says they were about a mile from their destination when the giant wave hit the boat, sending Speranza into the water.

He says they pulled him on board and started CPR, but he later died at the hospital.
