Funeral held for slain Milford health aide

MILFORD - Family and friends came together today at the Wildemere Congregational Church on Broadway to remember the Milford man gunned down while helping out a friend.

Police say 68-year-old Jose "Pepe" Batista was working as a health aide when he was fatally shot outside of the Fireside Apartments last week as he made one of his usual visits to a resident living there.

Officials say the suspect, Wilfredo Fernandez, shot him three times and then took off on a scooter.

Family members say the friend who Batista was caring for was unable to make it to the funeral today, and due to medical issues, is still unaware of his death.

Fernandez has been charged with murder and is being held on $2 million bond due to a long criminal record that dates back decades.
