BRIDGEPORT - Nearly two dozen people were left homeless but lucky to be alive after they say a Good Samaritan alerted them to a fire in their Bridgeport apartment building.

According to fire officials, the blaze broke out at 807 Arctic St. just before 5:30 a.m. Officials say when crews arrived at the scene, the entire back of the building was engulfed in flames.

Residents say they found out about the fire thanks to a passerby. They claim the man did everything he could to get them out of the burning building.

Fire officials say one resident suffered minor burns. They're still looking into the cause of the fire. The Red Cross is assisting the homeless families.
