HARTFORD - Gov. Dannel Malloy (D-CT) declared a state of emergency in Connecticut today ahead of powerful Hurricane Irene.

The hurricane is making its way up the East Coast and could hit Connecticut this weekend.

The governor is urging residents to have emergency supplies on hand, such as water, flashlights and batteries, and to secure outdoor furniture.

Residents who live in low-lying coastal areas have been told to be prepared to evacuate.
