Greenwich Apple store considers metal gates

GREENWICH - The Apple store in Greenwich wants to beef up security, but town leaders aren't happy about it.

Apple wants to add a ceiling-to-floor steel security gate inside the store's windows. Police say the proposal comes after thousands of dollars in merchandise was stolen during a smash-and-grab robbery eight months ago.

It would be a first on Greenwich Avenue and town leaders say that it would send a bad message to shoppers and threaten the ambience of the upscale neighborhood.

Officials say that even with strong opposition, the town has no legal means to deny the store a permit to install the gate.
